Hello everyone! My name is Seyde Delgado and I am interning with Jennifer Sevin, who teaches biology at the University of Richmond and is part of the Collaborative to Combat the Illegal Turtle Trade (CCITT). Because Covid-19 made placement difficult, I’m glad that I was lucky enough to receive an online internship through Pinhead. I had a Zoom meeting on Monday with Jennifer. She told me about the CCITT and explained what I would being doing for my internship. I have been very excited about this internship because even though it is online, it fits my interest in conservation very well. My job is to search for listings of turtles for sale online and record them. I will also be searching for news stories about illegal turtle sales and recording information. This information will be used by the CCITT. This week, I focused on finding turtles for sale online in Florida and Georgia. At first, I thought I would be able to find and record information very quickly. However, I have realized it takes time to learn to do this efficiently.

One of the most popular types of turtles being sold is the red-eared slider.

Outside of my internship, I spent time taking care of my many pets and plants. One of my tortoises has a respiratory infection right now, so I had to take him to the vet. There I learned how to give him an intramuscular injection to treat it, which is difficult because my tortoise is large and quite strong. I look forward to continuing my turtle related work both in and out of my internship!
