Hello everyone! My name is Anaya Martinez and I am going to be a senior at Dolores High School. My internship is based around environmental engineering and sciences. My job during this internship is to be doing Green Building Data Collection. The professor in charge is Amy Landis from Colorado School of Mines, and my mentor is Noah Sandoval. I am also working along side another intern, Indiana, or Indie. We have two meetings with our mentor every week day, one before orientation, and one after orientation (Not including this Friday).

Monday: On Monday, we had our first meeting with our mentor and the research group as a whole. During the meeting (whole group) we went around in a “circle” introducing ourselves. We had to say our name, current education enrollment, and how COVID-19 has affected us. It was a nice way to rid of all the tension and nervousness in the group. After introducing ourselves, Professor Landis went over our goals and expectations for the internship over the summer. It was casual, and really calmed my nerves.

Tuesday: Before orientation on Tuesday, Indiana and I had our first meeting in the morning with Noah. Again, it was relatively casual, little if no tension was there. We had a minute to give some facts about ourselves. After the minute, we went over our roles for our own little sub-group. My role is to collect data for Sustainable Buildings. Indiana’s role is to look at models. During orientation, our group discovered that we must do some Literature Reviews. Before this internship, I had no clue what Literature Reviews were. Basically, they are summaries and synthesis of articles you find. Fortunately, Noah had already collected some articles for us to collect data on. Our literature reviews are based on Retrofitting building to save energy and reduce pollution. I had the category of retrofitting commercial buildings. The reason that we are researching this is because the state of Colorado would like to have a 90% reduction in green house gases by 2050, and that will only be possible with retrofitting, rather than building new buildings.

Wednesday: The majority of Wednesday was dedicated to collecting data for our projects. Basically, we have to state the author, building type, location of the building, the type of retrofitting done on the building, the cost to retrofit, the savings because of the retrofit, and the payback period (how long will it take to save the same amount of money it took to install the retrofits). For our orientation meeting, we went over ways to organize our data and download our data so it is guaranteed to be safe. This came in handy on Thursday.

Thursday: I was unable to make any of the meetings on Thursday because I was driving down to Arizona to see my dad. We arrived around 11:30 am, which was perfect, because that’s the time my orientation meeting started. I went into my backpack and grabbed my computer, and got a surprise. My computer screen had broken and had no way to access my files saved on my computer. Fortunately, my step mom had a computer I could use. I am so thankful that most of our data was saved on Microsoft teams, so all I had to do was download and log-in. All of my data was saved on there, including the articles I had to read. While I was unable to join any meetings, I am still able to access my data. Good thing that Phoenix has “Computer Doctors” around every corner.

Friday: Friday we had a meeting with our mentor. During the meeting Noah went over what was due (Literature Review) and what I missed on Thursday.
