The first week for Aidan and I was a lot to take in. Our mentor, Andrew, dropped a ton of information about the satellite named Maxwell, it’s components, functions, and its operating system named Hydra, which is our primary project. What we have to do is make a copy of the code that we can edit (in case we mess up, it won’t affect the satellite). For now, we are just replacing the commands to work with Maxwell since the current system is made to work with a previous satellite, QB-50. Soon, we will also have to create new commands to include the EPS Telemetry Sensor Data for Hydra. We are not entirely sure what this data is yet, but it is a future project so we’ll see.

These are the lines of code we replaced to fit Maxwell. Previously, they were programmed for QB-50.

We also managed to catch a graduate student (who’s name we unfortunately forgot) test a CubeSat in an MRI-esque machine to make sure that it was magnetically neutral. It was quick but interesting.

Finally, on our time off, we’ve been meeting up with friends who are either also doing their internship in Boulder or live here, and exploring Boulder, a city that we are not too familiar with. Our activities have mostly been just eating at different restaurants, watching movies, or even just sitting at home, playing with our little host brothers and helping out.

We are really look forward to what’s to come in the next few weeks. Even though we’re just a just a tad overwhelmed with what is pretty much a big graduate project with multiple students working on it, we’re excited to be a part of it!
