The first week at the Aerospace Engineering labs in CU Boulder was so interesting! We met our mentors, Andrew and Les, who showed us around and gave us a brief tour of the Engineering section on campus. After that, we went to the place we will work for the rest of our time: the conference room and a specific office in which Mike and I would be able to work on our projects. So far we have been sitting in the conference room for all of our time, collaborating with mostly Les and another student, Alex, to code and make sure that the operating system, Hydra, is compatible with the new satellite Maxwell rather than QB50. The specific way that we do that is by looking in the definitions packet and look at the hex and specific line which needs to be changed. We then go into the code and then detach and erase all of the QB50 components and switch them out with the Maxwell variables. There are multiple sections like HK (HouseKeeping) and WOD (World Orbit Data) in which need to be changed. We also got to see some testing in action with the satellites. they put it into a stripped MRI machine to test the magnetic fields of the satellite to make sure that it is able to maneuver in space easier.

After the days at the office, we usually go to Boulder with friends that live in Boulder or are on there Pinternship as well. Typically when we go to Boulder, walking around and just overall exploring the city. We have usually gone to the Pearl Street Mall to see what stores and cool shops might be laying around. Yesterday we went to the movies and had an awesome time.

We have also had some days where we stay at home and play with the host brothers and watch movies. It’s nice to just kick back and relax.

Overall this experience has given a great idea of what it will be like to go to university and study. It has given a good background into that as well as living more independently.
