Hey everyone, Beck here updating you all from Santa Barbara. This week was spent a lot on the computer again looking at photos to label clam species. This week was also the start of the summer quarter here at UCSB (UCSB is on the quarter system). On Tuesday, I got to sit in on a lab thought by the grad student I’m working with, that was looking at beach hoppers (also know as sand flees). This was really fun and cool because not only did I get to use a microscope to look at the beach hoppers, we also got to go out a collect the beach hoppers ourselves. This turned out to be a little easier than I thought knowing that beach hoppers are kind of small. There were so many, and some of them like to play dead as a way to confuse prey, which made our jobs a little easier. When we collected our specimens, we went back to the classroom and looked at them under a microscope to identify gender, total size, and antenna size. During my time outside of the lab and this class I attended, I have continued to enjoy exploring the trails around campus and downtown Santa Barbara. Yesterday (Saturday the 25th) I went to go check out a fun summer solstice event that was happening all across downtown SB with venders and some good live music. I was especially happy to get a little live music since I missed Bluegrass Fest in Telluride. So far Santa Barbara has been a blast and will keep you all updated over the second half of my internship out here in sunny California!
