Hi, I’m Alise Hardie. I’m a pintern who attends Montrose High School in Montrose, Colorado. I will be interning at Colorado School of Mines, along with Farrar Desloge. At Mines we are working for Professor Andrew Petruska who is a mechanical engineer and his undergraduate and graduate students. While we are working together Farrar and I have chosen different projects to work on. There are many different projects offered as Dr. Petruska’s students are all working on different projects. While some are more research-based others are coding, to more of manipulating a machine.

We were introduced to each project and all 6 interns thought the projects over for the first two days. After that each intern picked a project to work on. Other than that, on our first day we offered our help to set up a computer lab for a class Dr. Petruska will be teaching this coming year. On our second day in the morning, we helped build little robots. The robots are built with Raspberry Pis and are very cute looking.

On the third day we were all in our projects and began working with our mentor more closely and learning a schedule for our day-to-day work.

I chose to work with Austin Oltmanns. His project is with mining equipment and with using sounds, how can a computer tell that the blade is dull. Using python and audio files we are creating a code to tell us if the blade is dull or not. This is called: software engineering. I’m really excited to get to work with Austin and learn more about software engineering.

Outside of the internship I went hiking and explored more of the Golden area. I also went to the farmers market in Boulder with my roommate which was really nice.

The computer lab we were asked to set up.
