I’m Jam, a soon to be senior at Ridgway High School. Like many other Pinterns who took the course, we are uncertain whether or not the internship I had lined up for the summer would occur or not. I was planning on shadowing the trauma unit down at Denver Health while also doing blood lab research at University of Colorado Anschutz. The Wilderness First Responder course (WFR) was an incredible experience, teaching all of us essential skills and knowledge one would have when out and about in the outdoors.

Before taking the course we were required to read a textbook that overviewed human anatomy, treatment of injuries,  the legality of different medical situations, and an absurd amount of acronyms. So we kicked off the first couple of days by reviewing the content we read with additional input from the amazing instructors we had. They were able to tell us their own personal experiences, explaining to us how treating a patient is far more than following steps from a textbook. Our instructors years of experience provided us with invaluable knowledge and taught us the importance of keeping level heads.

We were also lucky enough to have a few guest speakers in the field of medicine talk to us during our time. It was very useful to learn the different journeys that they all took to get where they were. The lesson I learned was that each individual is unique, meaning the journey they embark on will be unique to them. This may lead them to many different occupations and majors, but at the end of the day, you will know what is right for you.

Once again I want to thank everyone at Pinhead for this incredible opportunity. After taking this course I gained a sense of assurance I never knew I needed from being able to handle the direst situations one could think of. Making use of the resources you have is something that you repeatedly hear during this course, and I feel like this lesson I learned will be used for many other aspects of my life too.

Oh, and thanks for the space blanket Bob :).
