Hello everyone! My name is Zachary Vincent, I am 16 years old, and I have just begun my Pinhead internship with the organization History Colorado, working as an virtual intern in the Oral history department. As a brief overview, oral history is the branch of history that revolves around the collecting of stories/memoirs/experiences by conducting interviews with individuals. These interviews are usually recorded and then archived/distributed as necessary. History Colorado has an extensive oral history library, which is run by the oral history department. My internship revolves around learning about each step of collecting and saving an oral history, so throughout the next 5 weeks I’ll be able to go about collecting my own oral history, meaning that I’ll get to choose the individual I’ll interview and do the necessary research to create an excellent interview and contribute to the oral history collection at History Colorado!

My first week involved me brainstorming a list of all the possible people I might be able to interview from my local area of Montrose, Colorado, then narrowing down this list to just a few candidates I’d like to pursue. Now, I’ll take this opportunity to add that the list of candidates I made only involved my listing general terms, qualifying people based on possible professions and experiences. I’ve now begun the research to gather some specific names of local people to potentially reach out to in search of an interview candidate. This is a process that I’ll be quite sure to keep you all updated on, as it will continue to develop as I do more research!

Outside of my internship this week, I have been going on a road trip with my family to South Dakota! While following all CDC social distancing guidelines, I was able to visit the famous Mount Rushmore, for which I was told not to build up my expectations ahead of time. As a matter of fact, I found the monument quite impressive, and am glad to have gotten the opportunity to safely visit such an important “Shrine to Democracy” in such an uncertain time!
