My second week here in Boston was a short week of only three days because of July 4th. During these three days, I created more graphs and started work on a presentation that I will give on Tuesday for the entire team. Instead of creating a trigger like I said last week, I will be determining if the current trigger setup is good enough to track low mass photons. I have accomplished most of what I need to in order to determine whether this is possible and my presentation is focused on the small details of this diphoton decay. This week we introduced an ID cut to our photon model in order to get rid of all junk data that doesn’t pass a certain qualification for a photon. We basically got rid of background noise and fine-tuned our previous graphs.

For example, the only difference between these two graphs is that the graph on the left has an ID cut so we only get data that is actually a photon while the graph on the right has anything that “loosely” resembles a photon is counted. We saw this type of change in every graph in that all of the data got better and looked more like what we expected it to. This ID cut really helped us out and made our lives a lot easier and the data made more sense than before. This was the main job of the three work days along with improving my presentation in order to make it the best it possibly could be.

After Wednesday, my host family left to meet up with family in Buffalo, so I went to Anne and Fred’s house in Belmont. I spent the fourth and the weekend with them and we explored all of Boston. On the fourth, we went to Lexington and Concord and where the revolution started. I also went to the science museum, Tufts University, Harvard and all its museums, the North End and Old North Church, the USS Constitution, and the John F. Kennedy library and museum. Overall it was a great week and I’m sad next week is my last!
