This week Clara and I worked on our projects more, and learned the specifics of what we are going to be working on for the next four weeks. Because our mentor Andrew is currently in Guatemala, we’ve been watching tutorials and doing exercises specific to our projects on the Arduino and Solidworks software. Last week I wasn’t super clear on the purpose of my project but in short I will be using an Arduino Uno for sensor testing and characterization for the ADCS (Attitude Determination and Control System) on the MAXWELL Cubesat. Besides working at the lab, I have spent a lot of time working from home in order to complete all of the tutorials before Andrew returns from Guatemala. So far I’ve taken eight pages of notes on Arduino basics and the coding language.

Outside of the lab, Clara and I have continued biking everywhere and finally made it up the hill on 19th street without walking. We’ve also been able to get to the lab much quicker than last week and don’t get lost as much. We get tea pretty much every day and enjoy watching live music and street performers on Pearl Street. We spent the Fourth of July in a small town called Gold Hill where we watched the parade. Clara and I also watched the Boulder fireworks from a hill near the house even though it was raining, but it was definitely worth it.

One of the most exciting parts of our week was probably our run in with a bear just as we were about to leave for the lab. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials were outside and escorted us past the bear, which had climbed about 20 feet up a tree in the front yard. Sadly, we later read that the bear had charged several people and was put down shortly after it climbed down the tree.
