This week we decided to focus most of our efforts on setting up a small network of sensors in order to test what we have done so far. On Monday, we were shown the labs that the team has been using. Here Adriann has been experimenting with fluid flow and pore networks. He showed us how he records a fluid running through a 3D printed pore network and assigned Sean with the task of creating an apparatus to keep the recordings consistent.

The next issue that was on our plate was a computer on the Union roof which was overheating. Aaron took us onto the roof and showed us the situation and we researched methods to cool down the CPU. We eventually decided to try out phase changing blankets to remove some heat from the CPU. These phase changing materials won’t use electricity and will not affect the CO2 levels around the site.

Salt Lake City Bees won 9-6 in front of an almost full stadium.

For the network, I continued to refine my code to store the data from a CO2 sensor. Because the CO2 sensor we have is currently not working, I played around with temperature sensors and programmed my code to take data from the sensor in 1 hour intervals, plot the data live and save the graph, and then save the data into a different CSV file every hour. This code will work on one temperature sensor so I decided to experiment with Numpy, a python library, and its array features. Hopefully in the future I will have code that takes data from each sensor and produces a CSV file and a live plotted graph for each sensor.

On the Fourth of July, Sean and I had the day off because both the public transport and office were shut down so we went to a baseball game. We watched the Salt Lake Bees win and then saw a pretty impressive firework show from inside the stadium.

My parents came up to visit me and Salt Lake on Friday, so Sean and I ate dinner with my family at a Korean BBQ restaurant. The next day, my family and I drove up to Brighton and Park City. We took a short hike in Big Cottonwood Canyon and got the chance to cruise around Utah’s ski resort towns. We traveled to North Salt Lake to ride some roller coasters at Lagoon Amusement Park. I tried almost every ride that was open which almost got me sick.

On Sunday, I ate lunch with the family and watched the US Women’s National Team win the World Cup. I then said goodbye to my parents and started the second half of my internship.
