This week was my second week at the Bernier Lab. As we continued to wind down from the big DYRK1a conference, the clinicians started to review different tests they completed over the past weeks. This week we also had two more CONNECT-FX visits. During these visits they look at different criteria in order to determine if these subjects qualify for the clinical trial and then if they do, the will either receive a placebo or the real CBC gel. This week I was also able to obtain a reading list about different topics that the lab focuses on. By reading these articles, the hope is I will become better acquainted with the different topics the lab is studying. Along with reading these articles, I also obtained a special project for the summer. I will be using the data we collected from the DYRK1a conference to create a spreadsheet of the different behaviors we saw in order to help them better describe the phenotypes that are present for this genetic syndrome.

When I wasn’t at the lab, I was hanging out at my first host family’s house, hanging out with their girls. On Monday, I was able to play indoor soccer again. This week I also moved houses to my second and final host family for the summer. For the 4th of July we just hung out at the house as the weather was not great, but we were able to see fireworks all around the city from their rooftop deck! On Friday, I ran some errands around town and I baked some black-bottom cupcakes (a family favorite) in order to bring Telluride to Seattle! This weekend I will be going up to the Decatur Island with my host family, but there will not be internet therefore stay tuned for it next week!

I’m glad to hear about your special project and taking the time to read articles is important too. When I saw that you baked Black Bottom Cupcakes, I decided that I’ll make some too. Love, Mom
