Aloha,

I landed in Hawaii safely yesterday and will have my first day on the job tomorrow. This means I have not yet begun my internship. However, I have done some preparation, reading articles, and have an idea of my task. Therefore I will post this as a pick up for next week. The professor has forwarded me a few articles on a new phenotype analysis program entitled HTPheno. It’s a plug-in for the ImageJ processing program. This program can analyze the physical features (phenotypes) of a plant and determine it’s favorability. The system is intended to help scientists collect data faster without the grueling process of measuring every leaf with a ruler. The professor wants to learn what genes are responsible for phenetic adaptation to environment. So my partner and I will be tasked with culturing maize in different environments and collecting data with the HTPheno program. If all goes well this will be the building ground for genetic analysis to begin. I meet with the professor tomorrow morning to discuss the details of this plan. I look forward to sharing that with you in the next update.

Until then, aloha.
