The inside of the microscope

This week in the lab we shortened the training sessions for the rats. Their sessions are now one hour. Our goal is to get them down to the standard 30 minutes, but they have to learn how to press first. They started out with good numbers but, they are not pressing that much anymore. We ran close to two thirds of our group again in an overnight session in hopes that they would learn that pressing will give them a reward. Some of the rats improved while others still are not up to where we would like them to be. After the rats finished their sessions, we weighed them and relabeled their tails. I also got the chance to go with Adam, the post-doc working with us, to go see the special microscope, they use to view specific neuron activity in the brain tissue samples. There are different filters that are able to pick up different neurons and highlight them with different colors. The microscope will scan the sample and make an extremely high resolution image of the tissue.

The beach after our hike

Kacy and I went hiking at Torrey Pines over the weekend. We originally were just going to go on a short hike, instead we ended up hiking close to 6.5 miles. It was a lot of fun despite the heat. I forgot to put sunscreen on and ended up getting a sunburn on my shoulders. We decided to walk back along the beach instead of trying to hike back up to the trails and road. We got lucky and reached the beach during low tide so the little connecting beach was not submerged. After our hike we drove around a little to see Del Mar since we have not spent much time there. We ended up finding a nice little snow cone place and got some to help us cool off.
