Making a catheter

A finished rat catheter

The second week to my internship was amazing. Not only did we start a new project in the lab, but also we explored around San Diego.

In the lab, Molly Brennan, the lab manager, came back from vacation. She informed us that Megan and I will begin work on a new project next week. To get ready for the project, we made rat catheters. The catheters are inserted into the rats jugular vein and stick out of their backs. They are used for self-adminstration for stronger drugs, like heroin or cocaine. There are a few time consuming steps that go into making the catheters. First, you have to put all the tubbing together. Next, you put the tubing into a mold and you fill the mold with quick hardening gel. After about an hour for drying, you pop the catheters out and you are done. We had to make 70! Along with making rat catheters, we dismantled unused Nicotine boxes, labelled and weighed all the rats, and cleaned up the lab.

The sunset on the 4th of July

On the 4th of July, Michelle,Megan, and I went paddle boarding in the morning. The water was amazing and I had such a great time! Once it got dark, we got to see two fireworks shows! One from the La Jolla Country Club and the other from the La Jolla Cove. On Tuesday night, we got together with Sam, another Pintern in La Jolla, to go get a In-N-Out Burger. On Wednesday, we drove down to Mission Bay to go souvenir shopping. On Thursday, Megan and I got out early so we drove around and took Michelle to the beach once she got out. We stayed at the beach for over two hours and it was amazing! On Saturday, we got together with Sam and went to the zoo. We got to see a Giant Panda! Afterwards we went to get FroYo. It was wonderful and I can’t wait until next week.
