Other Stuff

So far, and especially my last post, have been mostly science based. Which is great– I am here in San Diego for a science internship. But that’s not everything I have been doing. San Diego is a beach town, this is my summer, and I have been enjoying the sun and heat.

This includes lots of outdoor activities, like running. There is a loop around the neighborhood I have been training, and I have also ran through some of the city. I map it on google maps to see how far I should go.

In fact, I signed up for a race next week end. It is ten kilometers, so about six miles, on a beach at low tide. Except, it is not just a running race, it starts off with a mile swim in the ocean. So I have been swimming too. My first couple of swims I could not even swim a mile, let alone a mile strait, but with some laps and a swimming lesion, there is a chance I might actually make it to the beach on the swim. I am excited for the race, and will give news next week.

Additionally, I have been canoeing with David, my host. Every Tuesday and Thursday night we have a two or so hour practice, and the long day is Saturday, where we paddle 15 to 25 miles. Last week, we had a race in the bay here in San Diego. I paddled in the novice boat, with David and four other guys. Our team also included four men’s boats, and several women’s boats, all competing against some hundred other six-mans for victory.

The Novice race was only 5 or six miles. My boat took off in the back of the pack, a position from which we pushed steadily forward. By the turn around point after going out to sea for half an hour, we had passed most everyone. From there we duked it out against a white boat, ultimately prevailing to finish a solid third. I got a medal and everything.

This last weekend, I took a trip to LA to visit my uncle for the holidays. I don’t see him much, and will probably see him less now because he is about to move to Israel. We went to two parties, saw some movies, and he bought me some cloths for this next year.  It was fun. I am going to miss him.
