Hello everyone! Although my official internship at CU Boulder has not begun, this past week has been pretty busy. Monday through Friday, I spent time with the SunSpears camp at Pinhead headquarters. This was a camp for 6th-9th graders which introduced them to major themes concerning ecology and other Earth sciences.
The camp began with an introduction to field notebooks and properly observing the natural world. From there, the kids used plant identification software as well as temperature probes (which they constructed themselves) to examine the nature surrounding Telluride. In addition, we worked on water pH, the biodiversity of water sources, and using the scientific method. The camp ended with a day long activity resembling a Mock trial, where a team of “fishermen” attempted to prove a mine’s pollution using methods and concepts they had learned throughout the week.
I was excited to meet Trevor, Ruth, Adam, and Dane, who all led certain group activities related to their scientific specialty. I led some activities, and learned alongside the kids during others.
After a fun week in Telluride, I drove up to Boulder yesterday to my host family’s house. Throughout the summer, I will be working with Ruth and Adam in Boulder at the Alpine Microbial Observatory, with Steve Schmidt as my mentor. I’m looking forward to the next 5 weeks!
