Taylor Holmes-University of Utah-Environmental Engineering and the Energy and Geoscience-Week 4

Hello again, I am Taylor Holmes from Telluride, Colorado. After a week’s hiatus home, I’m back in Salt Lake City working in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Energy and Geoscience at the University of Utah. We spent this week planning and preparing for a trip to Roosevelt hot spring next week to conduct tests. The work we will be doing out there will be much more focused on geothermal studies. Utah Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) is a program focused on improving our ability to capture energy from geothermal sites like Roosevelt hot spring. They use hot air and water to get energy from the hot spring, and they hope to find other ways of getting energy from geothermal sites without natural hot springs. We want to test for CO2, CH4, H2O, the soil CO2 flux, temperature in different areas and under the grown, and collect a soil sample so we can have a sizable amount of data on the site and know any effect the power plant may have on the environment. 

 

We started the week researching the FORGE site and others similar to it. We looked into how everything works and how hot springs bring water to the surface. After getting good background knowledge, we started some pulmonary tests so we would be really when we got to the site. First, we got Picarro set up and to bring to the field. The LI-COR and device that finds CO2 flux is being set back to the University, so I got everything ready to set that up for when it comes. Next, we tested the thermometers Around the campus so we could establish a protocol for testing them in the field. And lastly, we went to pick up and set up a GPS to track exactly where we were doing our tests. We are looking forward to going out in the field and collecting our data next week!
