Hi! I’m John Pumayalli and this is my second week with Percy Health working in app development. This past week was spent mostly organizing the infrastructure of the application. The two areas that we focused on were frontend and backend. The frontend of any program is what the users interact with, in other words, the User Interface (UI). This type of design is more centered around the visual components that will be presented to the public. For example, a frontend design will show where each button goes and what happens when said button is pressed. I was not involved entirely in the making of this “map”, mostly I just analyzed it to get an understanding of the application.

I spent most of my time working on the backend, which is the code that allows the database and the application to communicate with one another. I was tasked with creating files that offered an approximation of how data would be stored when using the application. Previously, a team member had created a “map” that showed the dataflow in the program. This “map”, also known as Information Architecture, displayed the “hierarchy” of information, clarifying where information will be stored. Other than hands-on work with the database, I also dedicated much of my time into researching the most efficient ways to collect the data (how each medical survey worked) and store it.

Apart from Percy Health, I spent time going on walks at the Mink Brook Nature Preserve, exploring Dartmouth Campus, checking out bookstores, and just hanging out around Hanover.
