Hello Everyone! My name is Taylor LaRose and my internship is at UC Santa Barbara studying Marine Biology.

Monday was the 4th of July so I had the day off. I mainly took the day to rest and in the evening Amiyah (a fellow intern and my roommate) and I went to Target. After I sat outside for a while and watched the fireworks that local college students were lighting.

Tuesday I worked on clam identification for a while until I was invited to attend a lab. For this lab I traveled with some undergraduate students to Pismo Beach to collect sand crabs. First, I had some dinner and talked with the students. We then had a competition on who could find the largest crab and I won! I was given a Starbucks gift card. After collecting the sand crabs we headed back to Isla Vista and to the college to look at the data we collected. We compared this lab to one we had completed last week and looked at the differences between the two crab populations.

Wednesday I did more clam identification. I went through many images and found all the clams within.

Thursday I did some more clam identification during the day and then at night I was invited on another lab. This lab was out near the Marine Biotech building. We built pitfall traps (jars filled with alcohol) for different small species to fall into. These traps were set up with small barricades that would stop the animals and show the direction in which they were moving. While we were waiting for the animals to fall in we made s’mores. After the traps had been up for 30 minutes we collected them and went back to the lab. Then we counted and identified each species in order to see whether they were moving up or down the beach.

Friday was clam identification again. I worked for a while and then later and the day Amiyah and I went to a CAAMP concert in downtown Santa Barbara.

Saturday and Sunday I went on a few walks, got some much needed groceries and went to the beach for the sunset.
