Week of July 4th Pinhead

Hello! I am John Pumayalli, and I am working on app development at Dartmouth. I started to prepare for this internship the week of the 20th with materials sent to me by my mentors, Carson Levine and Laurel Dernbach. The material covered the basics of React Native Application Development and Node JS. These courses were not too hard to follow, although it was much to take in, it mainly served as a refresher.

I left town on Tuesday, July 5th, and was able to hang out Wednesday morning in Boston before leaving on the Dartmouth coach. During my time in Boston I attended a M.I.T tour, which took me around campus and talked about the college’s culture. Later in the afternoon, I took the Red T-Line to get to South Station. The Dartmouth coach, which took me to Hanover, was a 2 hour ride of beautiful scenery. As soon as I arrived, Brian, one of my roommates, took me to the local Walmart to get situated.

Thursday I spent settling into the new environment. I took a two and a half hour hike around Hanover and the Mink Brook Nature Preserve. Once I got home, I went over my notes from the intro courses to keep my mind fresh.

Friday I had a zoom call with Laurel Dernbach, the developer on the team, we talked about the team’s future procedures. Later that evening, I went to grab some pizza in town and went for a nice walk around the Hanover area.

Saturday, I met Carson in person for the first time. We started out by going to her art studio to check out the designs she has been working on. I was particularly fascinated by a project focused around light warping. After taking a stroll through the Dartmouth museum, we walked around campus and decided to go eat at a well-known local diner called Lou’s Bakery. Lunch was spent discussing the next steps with the Flourish APP and the Percy App. The team that I am working with is currently transitioning from an old User Interface (UI) from an app called Flourish, and redesigning it to a new app called Percy. Once it started to get late, I was able to borrow a bicycle from one of Carson’s friends and ride it back to the apartment. Upon my arrival, one of my roommates, Brian, invited me to play a few Nintendo games, to which I was unopposed.
