Hello all, my name is Jennifer Gutierrez. My second week at the U began with a brief introduction to Python from my advisor (Ting Xiou’s) husband. He provided our small group of interns with a link to an in-depth free trial with many videos to learn Python at our own pace. We were welcome to ask any questions, but the course he showed us was very helpful. We spent most of our day learning Python programming.

Our advisor Ting also assigned us three sensors, optical, flow base, and sonic sensors to research and make a presentation. So apart from Python, we learned about flow base sensors from my coworker Zohar. We only had time for Zohar to present on Monday, so my coworker Marie and I would present our research the next day.

I forgot to mention that we got to meet a new intern named Taylor Holmes who also came from the Pinhead program. We got to show Taylor the Picarro machine and got it up and running without any help. Taylor was also introduced to all our research thus far.

On Tuesday Marie and I got to present our research on optical and sonic sensors. Ting gave us feedback on our presentations. We also looked into specific methane sensors that we could purchase. We asked for a quote on an optical sensor that looked very promising and continued our research. Finding multiple sensors is very important so we can find the best one possible since they aren’t cheap. I also had some fun with the Arduino pieces laying around. Most of the LEDs were broken so I got to see which ones still worked and which ones did not.

Wednesday I left back home because the housing was difficult in Salt Lake City. My family decided that coming back home would be the best decision, but I am very grateful that Professor Brian McPherson at the University of Utah is allowing me to continue working with such an amazing group remotely. I will continue researching and helping the group from home.
