Hello, my name is Beck Gilliland and I am studying marine biology at the University of California in Santa Barbara. I arrived out here in Santa Barbara last Saturday and got to work on Monday. I am helping out on a grad student project that is working to find out what different coastal reef species like clams are eating. This week started out with a lot of learning the ropes. I had a good amount of reading and studying up of different species of phytoplankton that live in the area. This helped a lot to get me started since this stuff is new to me. I was also able to help this week work with a bunch of clam samples that were gathered each morning. The job here was to filter each sample and put them into centrifuge tubes. When I have had time off, I have enjoyed  spending time exploring Isla Vista and Santa Barbara and going to the beach. It has also been nice just being able to explore the amazing campus as well. All in all, it has been a fun and sunny first week here and stay tuned for more updates.
