Hello,

As I write my Pinhead blog in the Baltimore airport, it is crazy to say that I have finished my last week in D.C.. Interning for the Rodham Institute housed within the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences has been a great experience. I would like to thank Dr. El-Bayoumi, Mrs. Kristina Williams, Mrs. Ashanti Carter, Ms. Tracie Bass, and to the two other interns with whom I shared the experience.

This week, I shadowed Dr. Raza Taheri, a neuroradiologist at the George Washington Hospital. Before meeting with Dr. Taheri, I managed to get lost in the wrong building! I wasn’t even in the hospital! Luckily, Dr. El-Bayoumi was a great help, and after asking many people, I found Dr. Taheri. Dr. Taheri analyzed scans from a total of five patients. After a while, I was able to differentiate the different body parts on the scans and somewhat understand what Dr. Taheri was talking about!  Two patients scans were normal. Unfortunately, one patient had many METS on his brain scan. The fourth patient had what appeared “covid-19 lung”. The patient had scaring in their lungs due to having covid-19 earlier in the year. The last scan, showed a patient with severe spinal fluid issues. Before ending my day with Dr. Taheri, I spoke to the medical students who accompanied him and about their journey to medical school. One student decided he wanted to go into the medical field his senior year of college. Hearing that was definitely a relief as I am not completely sure what I would like to pursue later in life. Neuroradiology, however, is on my radar.

As for the other part of my week, I was in contact with a leader from the Black Coalition Against Covid. I plan to do a PSA for them where I advocate for the covid-19 vaccine. I also worked on my webinar questions for the guest speakers of my first webinar on August 17th.

Although I wrapped up my final week in D.C., I will still be interning for the Rodham Institute until my last webinar on August 24th. My blogs, however, will be much shorter and spread apart as I don’t have much preparation left for the two webinars.

This last week, I ate lunch at a fabulous Indian restaurant that had many non-spice options for those who have a low spice tolerance (that would be me). One of the nights we took a night time drive around D.C. looking at all of the moments with their night-time glow. I also went into Annapolis and took a boat tour around the area.  I also had brunch at my host family’s favorite diner in D.C.. My last day was spent outside enjoying the low humidity and heat D.C. had this week.

Me in Annapolis on a boat.

Me at the Lincoln Memorial.
