Hello, my name Is Cailen Tougher from Telluride, Colorado. I spent a week over the summer learning all about being a Wilderness First Responder. It was an amazing experience that was made available to me by Pinhead after the coronavirus made it difficult for me to travel to another internship. I wasn’t initially interested in the medical field but I love spending time in nature which got me interested in the idea of the WFR. I got to spend a week learning all about life-saving techniques with a bunch of amazing students and equally amazing teachers. (One of the teachers used to be my counselor for Telluride Academy and it was really great to spend time with him).

The course was very knowledge-packed, covering topics from the basics to some very complicated medical terms and practices. The highlight of my WFR was the final test when they brought in a bunch of actors and we had to treat and save all of them. I was placed with a hysterical girl who didn’t have any life-threatening injuries but had hearing loss and I had to communicate everything I needed by writing it down. It was really amazing to see everyone work together and to assess the situation as a group. I absolutely loved this week with Pinhead and if I could do it again, I would. I’m also extremely happy to be more prepared when going on trips in the wilderness.
