Hello! Long time no blog!

These past few weeks have been filled with tons of learning for me. I have been continuing my online class in forensic interviewing, and it is still going great. Some of the most interesting topics thus far have included how much wording plays a role in interviewing victims and/or witnesses of violence. For example, I spoke with my mentor, Jennie, about the significance of the word “before.” To us, it doesn’t seem too complicated, but to children, this word can cause confusion and an inaccurate recollection of events. Even if a child has seemingly demonstrated that they understand the concept of events relative to others, interviewers must still watch the information closely for accuracy.

Last week, I joined Jennie in an online viewing of “Liv” through Tri-County Health Network, a short film highlighting one family’s experience with teen suicide. Following the film, members of the family, production team, and a mental health professional discussed and answered questions, which was incredibly eye-opening.

A few days ago, I joined some of the other Pinterns in a Peer Advocacy Training through the San Miguel Resource Center, which covered how to be an advocate for victims of sexual assault. We learned a lot about how to be a good listener for victims of this type of trauma, and what to do with the information that we are given. I definitely feel much more prepared to go off to college and beyond with these skills.

Besides my internship, I had my last day working at the pool this week, and got thrown in way too many times as a result. I started my last day off with falling in the pool putting the lane lines in, which was very cold, especially at 8am, but my last day was great nonetheless. I have been camping tons with my friends, and hiking much more too. I have watched countless sunsets and eaten lots of bread and brie (one of my favorite snacks currently). It’s crazy how close this summer is to being over, but it has definitely been great!
