Rhys Chambers: Autonomous Satellite Tracker

Hi everyone!

These past few weeks, Nate, Rowen, and I have been building an autonomous satellite tracker. It essentially combines radio/satellite with code in order to pinpoint satellites and receive data. The satellites we will be tracking will mostly be university satellites that track weather patterns and other quantitative data. We have been following the guide of a man named Elwood Downey from Arizona.

Essentially, we put together a tripod that holds the computer chips and data for the tracker in its base with the antenna on top. The antenna is also mounted on two gears that rotate both horizontally and vertically so that it can actively follow the satellite across the sky. As we move forward in these final weeks, we are working on making our satellite unique in some way, shape, or form. We were thinking that a waterproof aspect could be useful, but aren’t sure if this is really the smartest idea since there is so much precious technology that we wouldn’t want to risk messing up. Also, a big shout out to Nate and Rowen for being great partners throughout this whole project!

In addition to the Pinternship, I have also been working at the pool a TON and going on camping trips with a small group of friends. Last week, Margaux Lovely and I also hiked the new Bridal Veil trail. I highly recommend it, but I suggest going at a time when there are fewer tourists in town! I also recently finished the Girls Who Code summer program and had a great time learning some of the basics of Java, CSS, and HTML. Our final project in the class was a social justice website page built from scratch, and I did mine about the gender pay gap. Here’s the link if anyone wants to check it out: https://activist-toolkit-project-rhys.glitch.me/index.html
