This week was super good! I worked on my final project design document and a little SWIG/Qt in my extra time. I was taught the value of a good design, making the coding far easier, and given some examples where the design phase can took years and actually coding the project only took a few months. Design is really about what you’d expect, it is drawings and boxes that represent a product in code. As much as I didn’t understand the need for extensive design at first it quickly grew on me because after making a few mock ups I realized I wanted to change the entire thing, which in the design phase took only a few minutes, but in the coding phase could take weeks and be very frustrating.

My idea is to make a maze game, where there are randomly generated mazes every time and you can save and load mazes to and from a database. The final project has to meet a few requirements, it has to have a GUI component, a non-GUI component, a database component, and a web component. The GUI piece will be the game and window it is held in, the non-GUI will be a maze generation algorithm, the database will be for saving and loading mazes, and the web component will handle game rules and information. All together this project will require me to code in at least three languages and should take a few weeks of hard coding every day.

The project will be the last thing I do here in Boulder and it is the final piece of my training! I am super exited to work on something I can call mine, and develop an entire application from scratch.

My photos this week are of a little design work on a notepad (where all ideas start), and of a super good rockies game I went to.
