This was my final week here in Long Beach and it flew by. In the lab, I continued to help an undergraduate with her jaws project. The shark lab received approximately 6,000 jaws that were confiscated by U.S. Fish and Wildlife. We have been working on measuring them and identifying the species of some of the jaws. I have learned that even the smallest differences can mean it is a different species. To identify the species, we looked at the serrations, size, and shape of the teeth. They intend to send the jaws to different institutions for educational purposes. When I wasn’t helping with that project, I helped feed the round stingrays, go through video footage, and clean receivers for the white shark project.

Snorkeling in Emerald Bay

My host family and I took their boat to Catalina for a three day weekend. I met their friends from the Long Beach Yacht club and the people who helped make my housing and internship possible. I had a lot of fun swimming, snorkeling, and seeing different parts of the island. It was the perfect ending to my 6 weeks here.

I want to thank everyone at the Pinhead Institute, especially Sarah Holbrooke, who made this possible. I also want to thank Dr. Lowe and the

graduates at the CSULB shark lab who have given me a new perspective and understanding of the scientific research field. I could not have asked for a more wonderful and welcoming host family and community. This has truly been a life changing experience and I am so grateful for this opportunity.
