Our second week here was filled with many more specific tasks to take on. We were given a more in-depth look of Hydra, its functions and correlation with the XML  coding that we are editing. We have also begun to create new additional functions to the code specific to the Maxwell satellite. Hilariously, we all had different ideas for properly tagging the lines of code (which would remove confusion of one version of Hyrda being used for the wrong satellite). After some argument on how to tag each line of code to remove confusion of other satellites, the original tag we used (MX) would be confused with that of another satellite called Minx. So, unfortunately, we will have to go through each packet of code to replace the tags! Regardless, we have been making great progress in our work. The additions we made for Hydra were for the new EPS (electric power subsystem) sensors that, coincidentally, arrived the day we added the additions.

This is the new EPS Board

The functions of the EPS boards are essentially to organize and distribute the power from the solar panels on Maxwell throughout the satellite. The significance of our additions to the code involve the new features of the EPS boards. Previously, the boards would use 8 volts. The new boards use 12 volts instead, requiring it to work with the rest of the satellite with a brand new voltage. Additionally, the new sensors come with a new microchip (seen on the top right corner of the board), which automatically regulates the energy from the solar panels throughout the satellite.

For our tasks over the week, we still have to finalize the House Keeping packet and figure out the interference between the CDH code and the new sensors, which cannot be picked up at the moment.

On my time off, I’ve done the usual of hanging out with fellow Boulder Interns Aidan, Jess and Cooper, watching movies and screwing around Boulder. However, I did have the amazing pleasure of getting a visit from my parents and little brother for Friday and Saturday.

Mom, Alex and I upon their arrival.

We took a trip to the city of Denver and checked out the Pavilion Mall

Dad, Alex and I stroll down the street.

It was a great time, despite the fact that we didn’t actually buy anything haha!

Alex striking a simple pose before we leave.

Although we had no pictures, I also gave them a tour of the CU Campus!
