This week we finished running our molecular dynamics simulations, and with those, we correlated the IC50s of different ligands to various properties of said ligand. For example, we tested the number of hydrogen bonds the ligand has to the protein in order to see if that correlates to IC50. Besides that, we spent the week learning how to graph the IC50 data using Python code.

With my lab, I went to the aquarium during the second half of the day Friday. I saw more fish than I even really knew existed. During part of our fun afternoon, before we left for the aquarium, we visited the cryostat laboratory on the UCSD campus. Here they showed us machines that researchers will use to slice frozen material incredibly thinly.

For the Fourth of July, we were fortunate enough to see fireworks. Our host mom took us to a country club in La Jolla that she is a member of, and the country club was one of the only places in La Jolla that were setting off fireworks. I also managed to eat three cheeseburgers that day because there was an open buffet of some of the most American food that one could imagine. Unfortunately, there were not any french fries, but that mostly just served to help me save room for my third cheeseburger.

I’m excited for next week and the weeks after in the lab because we should finally be moving into research that actually helps the lab somewhat, as opposed to just learning important skills that we have yet to have utilized in a practical setting.

I had a great week this week, and hopefully, everyone else did as well!
