My name is Carlos Rodriguez. I’m from Montrose High School. My internship is at UCSD in La Jolla, San Diego California. I’m in a research program called ENLACE.

I arrived San Diego on Sunday June 24th.  I checked in and got my keys for of my dorm. I introduced myself to my roomies and met them. They are from Mexico and they are in the ENLACE program but in different projects.

On Monday, I took a training to be in laboratories of the university of UCSD. They gave me  personal protective equipment (PPE). Next, I met my mentor Erick Martínez and got in the lab for the first time. It was awesome! I looked around and there was a lot of machines and tools that I had not idea what they were or how they worked.

We started with the main idea of the research project about the graphene. We have been learning about the main properties of this nanomaterial. Erick was teaching me the functions of every machine in the lab. Also, I learned a little how to make entries in the computer and how to do a basic functions.

After my  labs were completed I went to walk around the campus to know it better. I also went to the beach at La Jolla shores. It’s a beautiful beach. On Saturday, we went to the San Diego Zoo. It is a big zoo with many kind of animals. I liked it a lot. I’m enjoying what I’m doing. This is going to be an amazing experience. I’m done with my first week and I learned a lot of new things.
