A core

Drangey Island

My fifth week has been great, I started it off by going to Utanverðunes where we were going to redo a survey because of new information. The farmer’s brother remembered that he had leveled called Kirkjugarður Icelandic for Churchill. So I spent my day swinging a scythe until that broke and had to cut the rest with knives (that took much longer). When done, I joined the main group where we cored for the rest of the day. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, I went to Hegranes to work at Hegranesþing. A grand meeting place for Iceland’s old government where our project was digging a test pit, trying to find possibly the first settlement in the whole fjord where I was coring. On Friday my family arrived and came up to visit. They picked me up after I was done floating for the day, and we traveled around Skagafjörður and made sure they got Icelandic sweaters. On Saturday I got a surprise day off that I used to take my family to the beautiful town of Siglufjörðu, and the city of Akureyri. Sunday I went on a trip with my brother and father to the island of Drangey a small island in the middle of Skagafjörður that is rich in lore and history, as it was the hideout of the Icelandic outlaw, Grettir the strong. The island is also home to puffins which are amazing to see in person. Once I returned to land I went with my family to the Ás cafe that serves amazing traditional Icelandic treats such as cakes and pancakes. We then went to a historical site called Glaumbær, which is a restored turf priest’s house from the 1600s-1800s. I am so happy my family came and got to see how beautiful this land is. I am having a amazing time. Thank you, Pinhead!!!!

A sea stack off of Drangey. According to lore, it is a woman troll.

Sounds like a wonderful travel and academic experience that the Telluride Foundation has provided you, and your family was able to share. Happy travels home.
