The Gordon Supercomputer Located at the San Diego Supercomputer Center

During my fourth week I was finally able to create viable data. This week I worked on concatenating the Ankyrin trajectory files. The program I used to concatenate the files is called CPPTraj. I made a script that included all three files. After a few taps of the keyboard, voila I had the concatenated trajectory file. This process took a majority of the week to complete.

On Wednesday I attended a lecture on Organic Mechanisms, which was an extremely dense topic to say the least. I also attended a lecture on Markov State Models which is an analysis method similar to clustering.

On Thursday the lab gave us a tour of the Supercomputer Center. It was interesting to learn how supercomputers have evolved throughout the years. We visited the supercomputer center because they play an important role in computational chemistry.

This week I gave a culture talk on Mexico to my fellow interns. This was very interesting because I was able to learn more about my heritage. Luckily, I presented with two other interns. We discussed the history, geography, and foods that are unique to Mexico. I made arroz con leche, which is rice pudding. Unfortunately it was my first time making the dish, so I did not cook the rice correctly. Even though the rice wasn’t fully cooked, the lab still enjoyed it.

A ball turret from a B-16

After working in the lab on Monday and Wednesday it was great to head to the beach and surf. I am pleased to say that I can ride smaller waves now.

This weekend I began golfing with my host family. I never thought I would enjoy it as much as I did. After golfing with my host family I went to Balboa Park, which is made up of many different museums. I went to the Museum of Man, as well as the Air and Space Museum. The Air and Space Museum was my favorite because it allowed me to see many of the aircrafts that I learned about in history class. I had always wondered how a ball turret on a B-17 functioned. The Museum had one on display, it reminded me of something from a Star Wars movie.

This week has been one of the most interesting yet. I am looking forward to all of the things I will accomplish in the next two weeks!
