La Jolla Shores with Laura

Another great week in paradise!

This was Will’s last week, so we made the most of it! The rats are still training to press levers, but they are doing better. Everyday we continue to run them for two-hour sessions with one-hour lever presses. Hopefully they will be all trained and ready to become alcoholics soon.

We also continued to read papers and present them to Marsida, our mentor. I learned a lot! I read this one paper on the effect nicotine on body composition that I found particularly fascinating. It found that nicotine does in fact decrease caloric intake and this is why a lot of smokers are reluctant to quit. I had to practice pronouncing some of the hard words though; scientific language can be quite tough! Will and I begun work on our presentation for Pinhead. We prepared to present it to our P.I., Olivier George, but he was unable to fit us into his schedule before Will left. So instead, we presented to Marsida and the other high school interns Kirollos and Rio. I can’t believe the program is almost over.

Outside of the lab, our amazing host mom, Laura, met us at La Jolla Shores beach after work and we surfed, walked, and had a “pizza picnic.”. Will and I went to Encinitas on Saturday and had a blast. We got these really delicious acai bowls and walked around the area. It was pretty cool. I continued surfing almost everyday, which was really fun. I’m going to miss the beach so much when I go back home. I will definitely have to come back and visit or else I will become surf-deprived!

But anyways, my mom is also in town to visit me which has been so nice. I have loved showing her around town and feel like I’m the local and she’s the tourist! I took her to all my favorite beaches and treated her to dinner.
