It is crazy how fast six weeks went by! I have had such a wonderful experience and I have learned so much. It’s going to be very hard to go back and I am going to miss all the great people I have met.

The rats in the boxes for the sensitivity test.

At the lab on Monday, we did the usual. We put the training rats in the alcohol boxes to run a session. Also, we ran all of Adam’s rats and his new training rats. On Tuesday, we ran sensitivity tests on a set of Adam’s rats. The test involves touching each rat’s feet until they have a reaction. In order to touch the feet the rats have to be put in special boxes with a mesh bottom. To do the test, you touch the rat’s feet with a fiber on a stick. There are about 20 different fibers each with an increasing force. The stronger the force needed to make the rat react, the less sensitive the rats are. Adam was using this test to determine if the rats going through withdrawal were more sensitive.

The different sized fibers. We mostly the red ones on the rats.

On Wednesday, Megan and I prepared the presentations we were going to present on Thursday. I felt some pressure to make it great because we would be presenting to Olivier George! However, I didn’t need to worry. On Thursday, Megan and I presented. The lab liked our presentations! It was great to show my newfound understanding of addiction and everything the people at the lab had taught me. On our last day, everybody went out to lunch together. It was so much fun! we spent about two hours talking about all kinds of stuff. That afternoon, Megan and I said our goodbyes to everyone at the lab and drove to the airport to pick Megan’s grandma up.

The Fireworks after the Padres Game.

That night Lora and Tom took Sam and I to a Padres game before I left. Although, the Padres lost I still enjoyed it. Plus, Sam was introduced to an all you can eat buffet! The game was also followed by fireworks. My last night in San Diego sure went out with a bang! On my last morning, Lora took me to the Little Italy Farmer’s Market.

I want to thank Pinhead again as well as Lora and Tom Fisher for helping me have such a great summer. Also, I want to thank the George Lab for teaching me so much and really showing me how important each new science discovery is. I’ve had a blast this summer and I am sad to see it end.
