Lab Work Update
All the lab work is going well. I have about 3cm left to analyze for LOI and I’ll probably finish this next Wednesday. The charcoal analysis process is also nearly finished. I’ve analyzed 53.75cm so far and there is about 30cm left.

Dish of the Week

Dish of the Week
The previous dishes of the week have shown a plethora of sediment in the petri dish but that is not always the case. This week’s dish of the week was chosen because of its lack of sediment in the dish. This dish only had 2 pieces of charcoal: the average dish contains around 20-30 pieces of charcoal.

Environment Science Exploration
On Tuesday Nicollette took me to the University of Arizona Museum. It was a really interesting place with many Native American artifacts from Tucson and the surrounding areas. However, what caught my eye was the ceramic “Pinhead” figurines. The Figurines were suspected to have served religious purposes to the Seris people. I found irony in the fact that I’m a Pinhead intern looking at these prehistoric “Pinhead” figurines.

Then on Thursday Nicollette showed me around the Tree Ring building. This is a newer building on campus that is home to dendrochronology studies. They had this huge sequoia slab that weighs 2 tons and has a 10ft diameter (and there’s little 5’3” me for reference). It’s crazy to think about how big and old these trees get and how much history they hold.

Newly painted kitchen island

This weekend my host family and I went to the Biosphere 2. It was really cool and interesting. We got to see the 4 different biomes and the living quarters of the 8 biodomers (the scientists that lived there). It’s absolutely incredible what they were able to create and how they’ve sustained it.

Time with My Host Family
Monday we spent the majority of the day at a friend’s birthday party but most of our other time went towards painting the kitchen island cabinets. We just finished up Thursday and it looked really good so we’re going to start working on the other cabinets next week. I can’t believe I only have one more week! It has all gone by so fast!
