My cells growing in their flasks in the incubator

This week I have continued with my project. We are still in the cell growing stage, so I have just been checking my cells to make sure they have good food and checking them to make sure they are not over growing in their flasks.  On Monday, my cells will be ready for the next step in my project, which is putting my cells onto 96 well plates and making the different types of medium to put in the wells with the cells.  This week I observed other interns do the same process for their experiment, and I took notes on what they were doing so I know what all I need to do next week.

I am looking forward to moving forward on my project because so far I have just been taking care of my cells which at most takes 30 minutes a day, so when I am not checking my cells I am researching and studying so I can understand my project a little better and a little deeper.  I have learned that when working in a lab you can have days where you are only are busy for a short period of time (which is what I have been experiencing) and then there are be days where you are busy non-stop. My week will look more like that next week.

So far for me, the biggest shock of living and working in a big city is probably the diversity.  My family has travelled a lot so I am used to being in a big city, but growing up in a small town I have never been around such a diverse group of people. Just in my lab alone, there are about ten people, and in my lab there is a woman from Russia, a man from Paraguay, a man from Japan, a woman who is African American, a woman who is Indian, and a man from England.  In the lab on the next floor they have around seven scientists from China and a scientist from Taiwan.  I have never been exposed to such diversity and so it has been a very big change for me and it makes me realize that this is how the world is, not just our small town scene where there are very few people that are not Caucasian.

Copa America game between Chile and Colombia.

This week I have done many things outside of work that, for me have always seemed like things I would never be able to do.  I went to a baseball game, which I have been to before but never this field, and just being at Wrigley Field and the atmosphere was a new experience in itself.  I also went to one of the Copa America semifinals games, which was between Chile and Colombia. It has always been a dream of mine to go to a professional soccer game, but I never thought it would be an international game for the semi-finals of Copa America.  The soccer game in itself was an experience of a lifetime.

I am looking forward to this upcoming week and I am excited for the new things that I will learn and get to experience.
