Last week I spent hours looking through a microscope drooling at all the amazing things I saw. I also figured out I could take pictures through the microscope with my iPhone!!!

I took advantage of that and drew a couple of the samples I was looking at.

I am illustrating a few species that are going to be published in a field guide! I’m going to be published!!! My name and art will be in a book!

The next week I helped with the Community College class and caught 70 plus isopods and 4 rockfish to monitor the indirect impact of the fish on the kelp — Do the fish scare the isopods, therefore making the isopods eat more or less, affecting the kelp?

The boat is one of my favorite places on earth. I’m surprised I don’t get more sea sick. Sometimes on my bike rides home I get the feeling I’m floating.

This last weekend I was fortunate enough to go on a trip to the islands off the coast of Santa Barbara. I spent the weekend with a class studying the intertidal species and the species that live on the sandy beaches too.

The island is not open to the public, only very few science operations are allowed there. The islands are very special.

My favorite moments include waking up at sunrise to catch the tide pools at low tide. There we found all sorts of wonders: black abalone, octopi, sea stars, crabs, urchins, and much more I can’t even name. The largest animal on the island is a fox, who is about the size of a small cat and the cutest thing you will ever lay your eyes on. But… they are thieves! They stole my favorite bikini!

But I didn’t let that stop me from swimming every day in the rich blue ocean that I’m SO in love with.

I’m finally back from a life altering adventure, and am still trying to find a way to draw EVERYTHING!

Super special thanks to Bob, Sarah, and Jessica for being the coolest people and letting me come to the island with them.
