Morgan Wright: Aeronautics and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Week Five

Today completes my sixth week at Piasecki Aircraft, and the days continue to be filled. This last week saw the editing of various drawings and parts lists, as well as continued work on the quad copter. Specifically, I assisted in modifying the power system on the quad to back to a series circuit, thereby doubling voltage and potential RPM for the four motors. This certainly was helpful in increasing the aircraft’s payload capacity. However, one problem still remained; three motors would not run. After testing and conferring with people who had worked on the craft previously, it was clear that three Electronic Speed Controllers (ESC’s) were faulty. Pending is the arrival of a computer chip capable of reprogramming the unresponsive ESC’s.

Along with working on the Quad, I also made a flight control list for a rotor section of ARES, which made for an interesting exposure to parts accounting and organization. The ARES craft is starting to really starting to come together, and has its Combiner Gear Boxes and Shafts installed. According to the official calendar, it should be ready for its first test flight by early next year.

The weekend off brought a short excursion into downtown Philly, where the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall displayed themselves, evoking awe from all that looked upon them.

“Parts accounting and organization…” such an important, integral part of a complex, developing enterprise. Good parts guys and the cooperative participation of those that depend on them grease a lot of squeaks. Good lesson, background to all the other fine work you’re doing.

No mention of a recon to the cream cheese works. Find out anything?

Meanwhile, a new question: Besides movie stardom, what do Cary Grant, Tom Hanks, James Stewart, and Denzel Washington have in common?

    Love,
    Da
