Miles Galbo: Aeronautics, Week Two

The second week of my internship has shown me what the aeronautical engineers actually do. Mr. Austin and I got to visit Arnold’s Air Force base, home of the Arnold Engineering Development Center, outside of Winchester, Tennessee. Arnold’s Air Force base is home to some of the worlds biggest and fastest wind tunnels where they could test an engine to see its performance when flying at x speed. This was Mr. Austin’s job, as he was the director of propulsion at AEDC. So when he was showing me around the facilities he knew what every pipe and screw were for. But one thing that cannot be described is how big these machines were. One tunnel took up about 5 huge buildings. It was just incredible to see.

I would like to thank everyone for making this experience possible to me, but I would specifically like to thank Mr. and Ms. Austin for providing me with an unattainable amount of knowledge and for providing a place to stay. I would also like to thank Sarah Holbrooke for making this trip possible. Thank you to everyone that allowed and helped me to spend two weeks of learning in Tennessee. It was amazing.
