Hello everybody and welcome back to the blog and week 3 of the internship. This week I didn’t have much work to do in the lab so I had the wonderful opportunity to stay home on work on ViQi from home. I’ve had the pleasure of staying in one of the ICON student housing apartments right here in Isla Vista, even with a beautiful ocean view. It’s only a twenty minute walk to the lab from here and there’s a lot of great food and coffee nearby. I have met two of my housemates and I get along with both of them pretty well. My housemates are both pretty clean people and the house stays well organized. If any issues arise, maintenance is usually pretty quick about fixing it.
While I have been working mostly from home this week I did have the wonderful opportunity to join the class for their last lab of Thursday. It was a night lab so Lexie came by and picked me up around 5:45. The class took a small test that lasted about an hour before we headed out to do the lab. It was a pretty short walk to the beach with really pretty scenery. The lab was basically a little test to see what critters roam around in the sand, where they are, and how many there was. We set up a grid like pattern and set up some traps to catch them. The traps were little jars that had some 70% ethanol so they couldn’t get out. During the wait we actually made a fire and got to have some s’more’s which was really fun and really good. After a while we collected the samples and headed back to the lab to count and identify them. Once we were finally finished Lexie dropped me off. While it’s been a bit of a slow week I definitely appreciate the break and I’m excited to see what next week brings.
