Hello everyone! This past week in Boston has again been a blast. In the lab, one of my mentors, Fei, showed me more about telomeres, which she is currently researching. She gave me a bunch of pictures of telomeres she had taken, and she told me to research ways I could analyze these pictures. She also asked me to come up with some questions I had about telomeres. I also got a lecture about RS FISH, another data analysis program. I spent the end of my week starting to tackle the data analysis and trying out some new programs to decipher the pictures.
One of the days, we went to the Museum of Science. This was a very big museum, and they had exhibits on everything. One of my favorite things at the museum was the Tesla coil show we went to.
On the Fourth, I went to some events at the Harvard campus where they had barbecues and lots of games. Boston takes the Fourth of July very seriously. That night I watched the fireworks over the Charles River, which was very nice. The next day, I decided to go to the Harvard Arboretum. This was basically just a big protected forest with lots of little gardens. This might be one of the coolest things I’ve come across in Boston. It was just crazy to me that they had this forest protected in the middle of Boston. I think it was also therapeutic to me because I haven’t gotten to see as much nature here as I did back home, so it was nice to be able to have a day in the woods.
I am very excited for the coming weeks in the lab because now I’m pretty much getting the hang of everything and doing some real work. Sometimes I still need to ask for help, but for the most part, I’m self-sufficient, which is a very good feeling.
