Hello and welcome/welcome back to my blog! I am Arianna and I am interning in public health with the Rodham Institute at Georgetown University. This past week was supposed to be my last week here, but thanks to my mentors and Sarah Holbrooke agreeing on me doing a great job here, I got my internship extended.
On Monday, I was scheduled by my mentor Tracie to take a tour of the US Capitol with a member of Senator Bennet’s team. I really loved this experience because I learned a lot of the country’s history and important historical figures. After that, I wanted to go to the Library of Congress, but it isn’t open to the public on Mondays, so I explored other museums and important places, such as the National Gallery of Art, the National Museum of Natural History, and the World War I Memorial. I walked around and learned a lot since I was alone and could take my time seeing every exhibit in detail, and I walked all the way back to Georgetown.
On Tuesday I was scheduled to go to volunteer at Bread For The City with my mentor Kristina, but because that got cancelled, we went shopping and I thrifted a really formal dress for a meeting on Thursday. When I got back home, I helped with some posts for the Rodham Institute’s social medias and spent the rest of the afternoon reading and working on my Internship Project.
On Wednesday, I was scheduled to go shadow Dr. Gigi, but she took that day off from the clinic to catch up on some work, so I went with my mentor Kristina to pick up materials at the Alzheimer’s Office in Arlington to prepare for a health fair on Friday. When I got back home, I spent the rest of the day reading and packing up my things since I was moving out of the house I had been staying at on Saturday.
On Thursday, I met up with the director for international students at George Washington University, a school I am interested in. There, I had a very insightful conversation with her and a former student at GW about what my experience would be there as an international student. After that, Kristina and I went to a restaurant for my “going away” reunion, which was reserved since before my internship was extended. There, I got to say goodbye to Dr. Gigi in case I don’t get a chance to see her this next week, to plan an opportunity to work with my mentor Veronica, and to plan when else to meet with my mentor Tracie. We had a lovely time, and after I was dropped off at home by Ms. Kristina, I finished packing up my things and got to meet the owner of the house I was staying at.

Genevieve Day Care Center Annual Wellness Fair

On Friday, I headed over to the Genevieve Day Care Center Annual Wellness Fair with Ms. Kristina. Much like last week’s event at the church, we set up a table to display information from our partnering organizations and hand packets out to anyone interested. Next to us, Dr. Katz was again providing free blood pressure screenings and important tips and information about cardiovascular health. During this event, I got to observe many elderly people suffering from dementia and the way they interacted with their surroundings and caregivers. I also got a chance to talk to Dr. Katz about the George Washington University, since he is a professor there, and he gave me some tips on how to make my college application better and chatted to me about his life and work.
Lastly, on Saturday, I moved out of the house at Georgetown and moved in to a dorm at Howard University, where I will be staying until the end of my internship this week. After that, I went with my mentor Kristina, her husband Adrian, and the former GW student, Pavan, to eat out.Although this week was not as busy as last week, I learned a lot and acquired more information and insight to include in my internship project, and I got to see more of DC as The Capital of the United States. I am psyched to see what next week will be like, even if it will be my last week here. Thank you so much for reading!
