Hello everyone, this week was my last week at VRCC and I got to spend it with the Emergency and Critical Care Department. They are there 24/7 with many people so I got to meet new people everyday. There was no appointments but they did do priorities first. In this department, they also explained that they are the ones that people go to when their regular vet does not have room to see them. They take transfers and they send animals to be transfered. For example, there was a dog that came in because it had been attacked and had it’s eye popped out. They do not normally do surgeries for that but they made sure that the dog was stable long enough for them to reach out to a ophthalmologist. The transfers that come to them can be from anywhere, especially from the surgery department. A dog can come in to get the staples removed from the surgery it had a week ago. I did get to see them preform CPR on a cat that unfortunately did not make it but it was good to see how well they worked together. I got a lot of advice from the vet techs and doctors and to show my appreciation for the hospital, I got them all cookies from Costco and wrote them thank you cards. On one of the days, my sisters car did not turn on. Luckily, we took my brothers car to get me to the internship. When my sister picked me up after work we checked the battery of her car. It eventually turned on again after we disconnected it and reconnected it but that was a stressful day for her. We went out to eat and I paid so it got a little better. On the weekend, my sister took me to a Renaissance fair. They had a lot of shows going on like Jousting and swallowing swords. It was a pretty big place and I had fun going. If I could, I would definitely love to come back. Today, I am traveling back to Norwood but I am glad to have been able to take on this internship through Pinhead.
Thank you,
Valeria Hernandez
