Hello everyone, this week, I got to be with surgery again. It was not a very busy week but I got to see a few good cases. The most popular surgery this week was a TPLO which is where they added metal plates to the bone of the dog to help with their torn ligaments and meniscus. There was another surgery case with a dog named Bennett that I first met with the oncology department. They had to take a CT scan to find a tumor in the dog so they got the help from the surgery team to remove it. While it was a small tumor, since it was on the pancreas, it caused the dog to develop diabetes. The surgery could not garentee that removing it could improve the diabetes so they sent him to the ER department to be monitored over the weekend. On that day, I also got to see a splenectomy, where they removed the spleen because it had a tumor and they had to tie the stomach to the side. Dr.Nye found a small skin tumor that she removed. However, while suturing it, the dog almost woke up which scared me but they handled it very well. Since it wasn’t too busy, I got to go home earlier than expected so I had to take a Lyft to my sister’s campus and to the apartment. On Friday, my sister took me to see the lights at Bright Nights which was pretty fun to see. Then she went camping Saturday so I was by myself for the majority of the day. It was a pretty fun week and I am excited about what I get to learn from the Emergency and Critical Care department.
Thank you,
Valeria Hernandez
