Hello, its Oliver and this was my first week interning at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center. I was supposed to start work on Monday but it got postponed due to travel issues, so I started Wednesday.  I haven’t been able to do a lot of work with any of the fish or other critters we have at the center as I have been working at as an educator in the Sea Camp program. We watch and teach kids 6-8 about the local wildlife and ecosystem. To start on Wednesday we did an introduction with the kids and presented a slideshow about common misconceptions on sharks and why they aren’t a reasonable thing to be afraid of when your are at the beach. We also went sifting for Coquina crabs, sand fleas and shark teeth.  The next day was themed around dolphins so in the morning we went on a dolphin cruise so the kids could see them up close. We even got to see Georgia’s smallest light house. It has survived multiple hurricanes lightning strikes and the Civil War. On Friday the last day of the cam we went to explore the marsh. We got to see lots of species of crabs, a gecko, and tortoise beetles which have 10,000 legs.  We even got to keep some of the fiddler crabs to feed to one of the adult sea turtles at the Science Center. In my free time I have been trying to fly fish but I haven’t caught anything yet so hopefully by next weeks update I can change that. The Science center has also told me that whatever I catch to keep and bring to the center for research. I look forward to learning more about fisheries biology, marine ecosystems, and local wildlife in the upcoming weeks.
