This week was so much fun! I’m beginning to feel like a true contributor to the lab’s work as I am able to work with my mentor, Anthony, on a coding project that will be a beneficial tool for the whole office when it’s completed.
Just like last week swayed towards more lab projects, this week swung back to more coding. One of the most exciting parts of the week was more freedom in the wet lab space. Being trusted to take ownership of a piece of the project for coding and lab work was both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. We are continuing to build a machine learning model. However, it is incredibly computationally expensive, so we are working together to build small pieces at a time and then putting them together on the Brown supercomputer. I also did a ton of imaging this week with several amazing microscopes and software tools. Finally, I got to thaw and feed several new cell cultures.
I’m also starting to recognize patterns in the work. Common trends and behaviors are becoming clearer to identify like identifying trends in nuclear morphology or debugging a recurring error in our scripts. I’m getting better at seeing the bigger picture and knowing what to look for.
At this point, I’ve settled into a rhythm in my work and personal life. I start each day by reviewing what’s been done and setting goals, and I’ve gotten better at tracking progress and staying organized.
There’s still so much I want to improve. I want to keep refining my technical skills and deepen my understanding of how our work fits into the broader research on cell senescence and aging. But for now, it feels good to see that the things I struggled with just a couple of weeks ago are now part of my daily routine.
It was a rainy week, but I found it to be very enjoyable. Although this meant I didn’t play as many sports with friends outside, I had a couple of fun movie nights.
