Hi everyone! This was my last week interning in public health with the Rodham Institute at Georgetown University. A lot of things outside of my internship took place this week, so I had a lot of free time, but I still made the most of my time here. We had one last health fair to attend at a men’s shelter on Monday, where we handed out information on diabetes, Alzheimer’s, strokes, different types of drugs on the streets, etc, as well as boxes of Narcan. This time we partnered with cardiologist Dr. Burger, who was offering free blood pressure screenings and preventative information on strokes. It was an interesting experience because I had never been to a men’s shelter before, but it was nice to see how many of them were genuinely interested in educating themselves on health issues and wanted to talk to us more about the information we were providing. Then on Tuesday I stayed in my dorm due to the weather, so that gave me time to keep working on my intern project and I even helped post on the Rodham Institute’s social medias. Wednesday was my last day shadowing Dr. Gigi at the clinic. this time it was only Raed and me, so I was able to talk more to patients. I particularly enjoyed a chat with a nurse at the Georgetown University Hospital, who was very open about the reality of working in the healthcare field, hierarchy of fields, and superiority complexes in professionals. Hearing about all of this in person was very important to me because I truly have no idea how my experience will be in my journey to become a doctor, and I think it is crucial for me to know the good and the ugly of the medical field so I am not too affected when I’m presented with challenges in the future. Before we were dismissed, Dr. Gigi met with Raed and me individually, so I got to say my goodbyes to her and thank her for the experience.

After clinic, I walked around downtown and then made it back to my dorm because it was too hot and spent the rest of the day reading. On Thursday, I had nothing scheduled, so I mostly spent my time packing up my things. On Friday, I was invited to watch the 4th of July fireworks and a cookout at ms. Kristina’s house with her husband and friend Pavan. This was my last “go-away reunion”, and it allowed me to express my gratitude to her and everyone who was alongside me durning my internship. After they dropped me off at my dorm, I finished packing everything up and got ready for my flight back to Colorado. I cannot begin to express how thankful I am for this experience and for all the knowledge I now have because of it. I met wonderful people and immersed myself in the world of healthcare. Thank you for reading!
