Hello all, welcome to week three of my internship at the Ting Wu Genetics Lab at Harvard Medical School! As the previous weeks, this week has followed in accordance and has been great! I’ve been truly learning so much and I am so incredibly grateful for my time here, I can’t believe I’m halfway done! The memories I am making, and all that I’m learning will surely stay with me forever. The week started with getting into some coding! This is something super useful in today’s society, and very useful in science, but something very out of my comfort zone as I’ve never worked with coding before. However, through the guidance of my mentors, and lots of YouTube videos, I’ve started to be able to effectively use Python to help visualize and graph my scientific data. We spent time the next day shadowing Fei, as she was completing phase two of a process called “FISH” this is an advanced and very cool imaging technique to label specific areas in a cell to be imaged.
We then performed our own experiment to “cell-paint” a cell; which is a process in which you stain certain aspects of a cell in order to be able to see and identify different parts of the cell (mitochondria, nucleus, ER, etc.) After doing this, we got to image our own cells, as well as have some free rein to really explore the microscope and all it can do, which was super amazing!

Throughout the end of the week we continued speaking on all aspects of spectroscopy and microscopy, with a wonderful lecture from Fei who studied physics. We also continued working on coding, and how to pair that with imaging and data analysis. Finally, to end the week, we had a bittersweet going-away party for a member of our lab (who is going to be a PI in his own lab!) Though I’d only met him that week as he’d been away, it was still great to have known him and gotten to eat some sushi with him and send a proper fair well in his honor! Then on my way home I saw two big wild turkeys just hanging out on the grass near my bus stop which was fun! Thanks for reading!
